Text Box: Those experiences provided a wealth of material as Jim embarked on a long-anticipated writing career following his retirement from the National Park Service in 2001. In addition to his two Hey Ranger books,
he has published short items in several national periodicals and is a frequent contributor to National Parks Traveler. He is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the Outdoor Writers Association of America.

Born and raised in Texas, Jim has been happily married to his best friend Velma for 44 years. They have two grown children and live in western North Carolina.
